Writing how to articles as training for a career

Could writing how to articles help with training for a career?

Sure, writing about how to fill a hole in a wall* isn’t very exciting, and it probably isn’t very exciting to read unless you’re desperately seeking information about how to fill a hole in a wall (some people probably are, actually), but apart from this this it could be that writing how to’s is useful training for a careers.
*I’ve just written a how to on this gripping topic, called `Writing a short how to article ‘, and am currently writing another how to on a more complex diy topic, called `Writing a how to article ‘.
It might be useful training for someone who is considering a career as a technical writer, or for a career that involves writing at least something about technical topics, for example.
It could be that architects are in this category; they have to communicate with clients - more specifically they have to communicate quite complex technical concepts to clients who have no idea about complex technical concepts.
Sure, they communicate with their clients verbally, at meetings or on the ‘phone, but surely at some point they have to communicate with them in writing - they have to communicate their technical concepts to them in writing.

It occurs to me that a college student who is studying for a career in any technical field - not just architecture - could make money by writing how to’s (college students are invariably broke, it’s almost a law of nature). And they could mention the fact that they have written a few how to’s and maybe had them published in their job applications.
This notion might seem a little bizarre but it’s a fact that potential employers value enterprise, motivation - they look favourably on people who have proved that they are willing to learn a new skill, do something for themselves, take chances.
Take chances? Sure. Every time a freelance writer writes something with a view to selling it he is taking a chance - he is taking a chance that the time he has spent writing the article will be rewarded by a sale.
